            SUCCESSor AND PrEDECESSor

            Successor

The number that comes just after a given number is called its Successor. We can find
the successor of a number by adding 1 to the number.

Example 1. Find the successor of:

                         a. 7 b. 88 c. 648
            Solution. a. The successor of 7 = 7 + 1 = 8

                         b. The successor of 88 = 88 + 1 = 89
                         c. The successor of 648 = 648 + 1 = 649

            Predecessor

The number that comes just before a given number is called its Predecessor. We can

find the predecessor of a number by subtracting 1 from the number.

Example 2. Find the predecessor of:

                         a. 6 b. 99 c. 1246
            Solution. a. The predecessor of 6 = 6 – 1 = 5

                         b. The predecessor of 99 = 99 – 1 = 98
                         c. The predecessor of 1246 = 1246 – 1 = 1245
